Pioneers Die as Hampton County Records Loss Mount
Two local pioneers died in Fulton and Hampton counties with George A. Pettis aged 71 and Lydia Wright Caldwell aged 70. Pettis, born in New York, served in the Fifty-sixth Illinois during the Civil War and lived in Franklin county since 1867 with Louisa C. Wright Pettis. Lydia Caldwell, born in Canada, married twice and left three children by her first husband. funeral services were held in Hampton with burial in Hampton cemetery.

They were married at the Presbyterian manse in Independence after she arrived with a slightly injured arm and then traveled to Jefferson Barracks with family.
