Des Moines June 22 There is no hope for modification of the freight rate increase order promulgated by Director General McAdoo to take effect June 25 Dwight N Lewis chairman of the state board of railroad commissioners wires from Washington where he has been in conference with Judge Prouty former interstate commerce committee member representing McAdoo The 26 percent increase will hold and class rate minimums will be added upsetting long standing low distance tariffs on coal brick sand crushed stone and building materials Local rates from five to forty four miles jump markedly Coal rates from five miles rise from 30 to 60 cents ten miles from 34 to 64 cents and 44 miles from 66 cents to 1 01 The state expects the proper remedy would be to appeal to the Interstate Commerce Commission but little hope exists that changes will be made McAdoo is reportedly in Arizona for his health Lewis and Commerce Counsel Judge Henderson and other state officials appealed to Judge Prouty who McAdoo designated to hear complaints

J A Edwards a 65 year old farmer from between Green Mountain and Gladbrook went to the Marshalltown recruiting station to volunteer. He expressed a strong desire to serve and noted he knows others who should go but cannot. He was told recruitment limits exclude men over 41 for regular army. Federal court rules against personal liquor transport under Reed amendment

Cedar Rapids man is jailed for failure to register
Joseph Szymirek of Cedar Rapids, age 29, fireman on the Northwestern railroad, pleaded guilty to failing to register under the selective service act. He was sentenced to one day in Webster County jail and to be taken to Cedar Rapids for immediate induction, after being arrested June 14 1918. He said he forgot the registration date and had tried to enlist in Kansas City and Waterloo but failed physicals.

George D. Bacon of Vinton died from spinal sclerosis after five years of illness. Born November 25, 1855 in Marengo JH, he moved to Vinton, finished the local high school, and worked in the butcher trade with his father and brother. He married Mattie Adams on August 22, 1877, spent 22 years as a traveling salesman, later partnered with George Sanders in wool, hide and fur, then ran a truck farm near town before death. survived by his widow and one son.
