Shelby cross manages a rapid, daring campaign using limited forces to capture towns, cut rail lines, and outmaneuver a much larger Federal field, earning fame but delivering few lasting strategic gains.
General Joseph Shelby's mounted raid in 1863 invaded Missouri covering 1000 miles. He fought battles and skirmishes in six weeks, garrisoned twenty towns, destroyed eleven forts, and inflicted or suffered 2500 casualties. His force returned to Arkansas with more men than started.
