Canada grain totals last year reached 5 798 000 tons with average haul 7.6 miles, producing 44 005 000 ton miles. Savings from better roads range 4 to 19 cents per ton mile, totaling 1 762 900 between dirt and improved dirt, 4 406 500 between dirt and gravel, and 8 372 350 between dirt and macadam roads. If applied to all crops, annual savings would be vast. Parliament allocated 20 million dollars for good roads in five years starting 1919. Each province receives 80 000 annually from the fund with remaining allotment by population.
