Cement Workers Win $1 Hourly Pay in Davenport

Officials report a new contract with Davenport cement finishers setting wages at $1 per hour. The agreement bars recognition of the common labor union, and prohibits sympathetic strikes as strikers press for an eight hour day higher pay and a closed shop. About 100 cement finishers are in the union, with past wages around 70 cents an hour, some contractors noting prior payments of 90 cents or even $1 in recent times.
