Des Moines Primary Shapes Strong Road Bond Backers

Supporters of the road bond issue won major seats in the Forty-third Iowa general assembly. The paved road advocates gain senate strength and expect House gains with the bond issue likely to be voted on when the legislature convenes. A commission from Gov Hammill will study secondary roads for next winter’s program. Some anti bond candidates were defeated.

Primary opposition fades as hard roads drive clears in races

Voters approved the hard roads program in many counties but opponents remain. Patterson of Kosssih county led the anti bond group and was defeated while Fred Lovrien of Humboldt was renominated. Senators Ulstad Wright Thompson and others were held over as organizing efforts continue. Several incumbents secured nominations without opposition, and a potential contest may challenge the Patterson Breckenridge senate result in the Forty-seventh district amid a close total primary vote near 250 000.

Voter totals show lower turnout than past presidential elections

A political race for United States senator had Brookhart and the late Senator Cumnins as main contenders with 490 000 votes, far below state strength. Previous presidential votes reached 876 960 in 1924 and 695 082 in 1920, while a Chesapeake Bay pest over oyster beds threatens shells and oysters.
