Washington July 21. Capital politicians speculated Wayne Wheeler, head of the Anti Saloon League, may be losing his iron grip. A split surfaced between Wheeler and top lieutenants Bishop James Cannon and Rev Arthur J Barton after Cannon and Barton issued a statement denying Wheeler spoke for the league on a plan to let dry Democrats vote for a candidate if Gov Al Smith is nominated. The Cannon Barton note said Wheeler spoke as an individual not for the league, a response to southern Democratic reaction to his remarks.
