Mrs Jud Scarde hosts social events in Sioux City with Mrs Hiram Gross visiting. Wedding announcements include Bernita Tarrell and Howell Simmons tying July 9 at St Patrick Marengo. Marie Barney engagement to Henry Heppe announced at the Barney home. Birthday Club Honors Mrs. Galbraith with Surprise

The Birthday Club surprised Mrs. E. J. Galbraith yesterday afternoon for her birthday anniversary. She received gifts as games and music provided entertainment. A four course luncheon was served by Mrs. Galbraith and coordinated by Mrs. H. Lawless.

Old Settler 85th Birthday Brings Pioneers Gathered

In Orange township a gathering marked the eighty fifth birthday of John J. Berkley, oldest continuous resident since 1862. Attendees included members of Matthias Miller and Lichty families, plus Far West descendants, while W. S. Gougtiour, J. Klingaman, and others traveled from Waterloo and Long Beach as part of the pioneer reunion. An informal program, led by Samuel Fike, featured representatives from assorted pioneer lineages.

East High Band to Play at Fountain Unveiling in Waterloo

East High school band will perform at Gates Park for the fountain unveiling gifted by the Gates Park Civic Club. Mayor Glenn Tibbitts, park board members, and St. Mary’s pastors attend as guests. Mary Ann Studebaker will unveil the fountain with eight girl assistants in a Goddess of Liberty portrayal.

Detective Returns from Denver Trip After Suspect Sent Elsewhere

Detective Ralph Davis, in Waterloo, laments a Denver trip halted when Jack DuBoise, auto thief wanted here, was shipped to Elwood Neb. for burglary charges. Davis had traveled to Des Moines for requisition papers to bring DuBoise back but was ordered to return home as the suspect was unavailable.

Popcorn Acreage Shrinks Sharply in Iowa

Iowa's popcorn acreage has fallen markedly over two years. Last year’s crop was 42 percent below 1925. current plantings are about 14 000 acres versus 29 366 in 1926. 1926 acreage was 54 percent under 1925. A Cresco grower, W B Perry, reported high yields and seed sales, showcasing developed varieties with strong prices.

Crosley Dealers Meet With Standard Battery in Iowa

About 125 Crosley radio dealers from 35 Iowa counties gathered at Hotel Russell Lamson as guests of Standard Battery Company in a two session meeting. Chief speaker N M Miller of Burgess Battery Company spoke from Madison Wisconsin with Crosley and Willard Battery representatives also present. The Linn County distributor notes Crosley products have growing annual business and the meeting is held yearly.

Addition to Independence Plant Construction Starts

Operations begin around August 1 to add a new section to the Stevens Dry Cleaning plant. N B Murphy will erect the building at the rear of the Main Street east site.
