Light Ray Brought Johnson Willard Movies Into U S
Glens Falls July 20 The mystery of how the Dempsey Tunnery fight pictures entered the United States may be cleared today by public disclosure of how the Johnson Willard films were brought in after the Havana bout twelve years ago. A dark room was set on the border line and light was projected one inch across from a negative to a positive print. The operation was quiet and swift with nothing but light crossing the line. The films were shown in the U S with no record of official action. Harold H Frear a Glens Falls insurance man witnessed the process and provided the first account. The transfer occurred at Rouses Point on Lake Champlain in a tent straddling the border. A boundary line was surveyed, a dark room built, and the lens and film placed one mile apart across the line with power from an automobile battery. The prints were renewed and the copies as good as the originals. Officials said the operation was legal as the border forbade transport of films across and photographic reproduction, yet names of the men were not disclosed.
