Mayors of Iowa Cities Unite in Tax Raise Fight
Des Moines July 1 Special Representatives of various cities urged the state executive council to oppose increased valuation on city property. Mayor Garver Des Moines said property is taxed at 70 to 80 percent of value and cannot bear higher valuation. Frank Pierce Marshalltown secretary of the league of municipalities offered data on city property valuations and taxes to compare with county values. Mayors from Ottumwa Waterloo and others cited higher city tax percentages and noted difficulties in assessing income from property with vacancies and varying tenancy. This was the last hearing day with several counties unrepresented.
