Fifty Years Ago In The Courier July 8 1869
Fifty years ago on July 6 in our town a July celebration included a national salute. Bert Bullock and Isaac Teeter were burned by a premature discharge injuring their faces. A crowd of about 10,000 filled the streets for a parade and program at Mullan's Grove. Orton's Circus drew praise for its homegrown organization. Weather and crops showed strong growth after heavy rains. The celebration featured A C Hewett urging liberty and equality before the law, with Ireland and Hungary invoked for freedom. George D Ingersoll, once a partner in starting the Waterloo Courier, rejoined old acquaintances after returning from Montana. Mining lagged due to scarce water.
