Water-loom freight cut saves Waterloo coal users
After a three year fight the Greater Waterloo association won an Interstate Commerce Commission ruling cutting soft coal freight from Illinois Indiana and Kentucky to Waterloo by 20 cents a ton. The new rate drops to 3.15 for lump coal and 2.96 for screenings, with Illinois coal supply uncertain and retail prices not immediately dropping. Local plants Rath Packing and John Deere consume 50-60 and 40-50 tons daily respectively, benefiting from the reduced freight costs.
