Leonard Smothers, 24, of Gilmore City Iowa, charged in Fort Dodge municipal court with larceny and soliciting prostitution after a shoplifting incident at Lauerman’s. He claimed resemblance to Rollie Blackburn, linked to a Sioux City oil station murder and later highway robbery in Colorado. Smothers said he and Blackburn were pals at Anamosa State Prison. He has a wife in Fort Dodge. his alleged accomplice Dorothy faces prison and fines. Affidavit by Sam Hilliard filed last night.

Two Minnesota national guard officers returning from an encampment near Winona died when their car ran off a high bridge. Major Oscar L. Hemstad, 40, and Lieutenant Junior F. Barker, 25, were killed instantly near Winona Minnesota. The crash occurred as they headed toward St Paul after the encampment. The incident was reported by INS.
