Master Farmers Lead Iowa Agriculture With Business Methods
Des Moines reports highlight 15 Iowa master farmers who operate over 6,000 acres with plants ranging from 250 to 900 acres each. Their combined land and equipment exceed a million dollars, with individual operations worth 40,000 to 125,000. They apply business principles to farming, yielding returns between 5 and 8 percent annually since 1921, while prioritizing education, community leadership, and modernization. All began as tenants, some left school early for economics, yet many now support higher education for their children and lead county farm bureaus.
