Christine's Trials Amid German Flight To Switzerland 1914
The diary records Christine's perilous escape from Berlin to Switzerland in August 1914, as war spreads. She describes Bernd’s encouragement, a stern German colonel, and a perilous journey through towns and trains with surveillance, heat, and fear. Her farewell to England and hope for reunion with Bernd dominate the entries.
