Mastodon Bone Unearthment Thought To Be Miracle
A mastodon shoulder blade, three feet long and weighing about five tons, was found near Avalon Avenue in Westfield. Harold and Willian Everingham unearthed the fossil while digging for a telephone pole. The bone, exposed in sand and gravel, suggests the animal stood nine feet high with limited companion fragments found elsewhere. Researchers plan to have it cleaned and offered to the Iowa State Teachers College.
