Plan to trade Fort Des Moines land for Camp Dodge acres in Iowa
Des Moines reports Governor Lasher advocates a state government trade to obtain Fort Des Moines property for military use in exchange for 570 acres at Camp Dodge. The scheme would need congressional and Iowa legislative action, and Camp Dodge now remains used without compensation while Fort Des Moines sits idle. Lasher says a headquarters and training site is needed for state troops, with Fort Des Moines offering ideal facilities for cavalry, infantry and artillery. Meanwhile recruiting expands in several towns including Council Bluffs, Avoca, Harlan, Glenwood, Red Oak, Shenandoah and Winterset, with Waterloo and Fort Dodge also active.
