Three Industries Up Payrolls in 1918 January
Washington report shows cigar making, paper manufacturing, and iron and steel mills were the only industries among 13 examined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to hire more workers in January 1918 than in January 1917. Cigar factories rose 4.0 percent, paper mills 0.3 percent, and iron and steel 2 percent, while automobile plants fell 10.4 percent, silk 9.8, boots and shoes 9.2, and leather 8.9. Nine industries posted payroll increases year over year, led by woolen manufacturing at 18.3 percent and cotton factories at 17.4 percent, with a 1.8 percent decline in workers. Boots and shoes, automobile, and leather saw payroll declines, leather down 11.9 percent.

Commercial Club at Manchester Gets-Together Affair
The Manchester Commercial club held its annual get-together at the Armory on Tuesday night. Nearly 300 attended a Hooverized menu with democratic service by white coated members.
