PURSE VERSUS SPIRIT GENEROSITY IN FAMILY RELATIONS
A discussion contrasts generosity of the purse with generosity of the spirit. Some people give money, others give warmth, while some act coldly yet politely. A widow-like mother-in-law receives more affection from Lucy than from a dutiful sister-in-law, proving kindness matters more than wealth. Hazlitt’s saying echoes: goodwill, not service, strengthens friendships.
