Iowa Rail Rates Under Debate as Committee Schedules Hearings

Des Moines February reports say the railroad committee will take up a memorial and bill drawings next Tuesday to decide if the measure should be introduced. Petitions favoring a 1.2 cent rise to 2.5 cents a mile are circulating among residents and railroad workers who seek increased passenger revenue. The industry currently nets over $20,000,000 from passengers with an average rate around 1.93 cents per mile, and the proposed raise would add more than $5,000,000 in Iowa alone. Leaders acknowledge broad support and push to act quickly, while also funding the railroad commission to mount a defense in interstate rate cases.
