Tuscania Tragedy Reveals Romance in Newton
Cororal Gari Smith of Monroe, aboard the Tuscania when torpedoed, is reported safe and a married man. Marriage, kept secret since January 1916, was revealed when the war department sought to contact Mrs Carl Smith of Newton about her husband. Smith enlisted in the One Hundred Fifty-eighth aero squadron at Fort Snelling in 1917 and trained in New York City before sailing. He is son of Mr and Mrs C C Smith of Monroe and formerly manager of Smith and Sons Lumber. Mrs Smith resides with her sister in Newton and works as a stenographer.

Des Moines reports Dr. A B Kepfard says the Red Cross received 269.10 from the Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers Association for Camp Dodge. Krizer Bros Eddyville donated half the prize corn proceeds, totaling 539, with half aiding Mahaska county Red Cross and the other half directed to Camp Dodge base hospital. The champion bushel was auctioned by Gov Harding, and the growers refused private sale.

Iowa Falls Pioneer Mrs Stevens Dies in Missouri
Tsabella Stevens, longtime Iowa Falls resident and widow of one of the town founders, died last week in Caswell Missouri at 79. She leaves two sons in Nebraska and two daughters including Mrs J D Cowan of Minnetella and Mrs George Joslyn. She had been helpless for the past year and a half after a double marriage in the early days of Iowa Falls. Her first husband J Pierca died. she later married Hosmer Stevens, a figure in local hotel business and town platting.
