A 1904 reprint reproduces John H Leavitt’s Waterloo population note from September 27 1854 describing a town of about 200 inhabitants with two dozen log and frame houses along the Cedar River, a fording crossing, early mills and stores, government land entries, and a developing regional map and transport links explaining Waterloo’s rough growth to 1 000 plus by 1904. The document contrasts fast modern access to Chicago via rail with the slow wagon and stage routes of 50 years earlier.
