Des Moines reports that Senator Kimball and committee work move Whitmore's primary reform measures forward with amendments. Proposals would locate U S senators and governors in primaries, while state officers for others go to state conventions. Personal consumption rules and county superintendent elections face further action and debate.

Cedar Rapids council of Knights of Columbus is first such group nationwide to endorse the administration’s stance in breaking off relations with Germany. At a meeting, resolutions offering support and royal cooperation to President Wilson were adopted and sent to Washington. The group declared, We are with you in whatever action of course you may decide men.
Sioux City Iowa February 7 Moore Sheathers Grocery Company announces a 50 dollar bonus for every birth to its employees this year. If twins or triplets are born the bonus is doubled. The program aims to reward family growth among staff.
Des Moines Feb 7 Govard Spy testifies before the senate appropriation committee on a 25000 fund to be used by the governor and attorney general for law enforcement. Governor Harding criticizes vague provisions and argues for specific allocations only. The bill is sent back to Rateliff for revision.
Des Moines Feb 7 The Iowa Senate in executive session confirmed Gov Clarke's three delayed appointments WT F Jones of Villisca to the state board of education A B Funk as state industrial commissioner and Judge W S Withrow of Mt Pleasant to the state board of payroll Jones confirmation was contested amid controversy over his role in the Villisca murder case and he reportedly received 34 votes, the required total.
South Side representatives and railroad executives spar over a Senate railroads committee measure to require pilot conductors on light engines. Lobbyist A Moard and John Gibson urged safety benefits while Don Evans of Great Western and operators argued the law unnecessary and potentially burdensome.
Mt. Pleasant Pennsylvania February 7 1899 H and McGrew and William Stewart filed 24 charges against the city council and mayor and the paving company. If proved, the city faces long costly litigation possible criminal action and invalidation of paying assessments. Past year assessments totaled 74863.78 with 25 percent of those assessed meeting the city council on Saturday and Monday nights to protest high charges.
Keokuk February 7 a local concert featured a patriotic band directed by a German American. In response to the German crisis an American war hymn was substituted for the German Military Tattoo. John B Mindig, former Gilmore’s band member and regimental band director with Gen. Custer, leads the Min dig's concert band.
Verty Iowa Feb 7 a 3 year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Kimmell set fire to a house twice. First under a cupboard the flames were found and put out. Next day while mother was out the boy lit a page in a stove and a bed burned. Neighbors helped save the home causing a burned bed curtains and wallpaper.
Manchester, Feb. 1. At the Commercial club dinner a larger turnout and interest were noted. Dr. N. D. Wilson was authorized to hire a dedicated secretary for club boosting and to invite speakers from Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo. G. H. Dunham will start new duties at Waterloo Loan & Trust on March 1, with his departure noted gratefully by friends. Also reported is the marriage of Miss Maybeies Miller to Rupert Frost, with a small ceremony and reception in Manchester.
The Iowa House passed the Meredith bill to return county superintendents to popular election with a 1500 salary. The Rayburn bill to raise juror pay to three dollars a day was advanced. Cedar Rapids lawyer J H Trewin is invited to address the judiciary committee. Woman suffrage amendments remain with a subcommittee until after February 9 hearings. A proposal to elect mayors in odd years and council members in even years was killed as too costly. Rogers of Carroll defended women’s role and blocked a playground superintendent bill even for women.
Dr Sudh hinda Bose a native of India and professor at Iowa university was naturalized in Iowa City along with nearly a dozen immigrants from Germany and other lands. They pledged loyalty to the United States should war with Germany arise. Evening Courier reports the event as latest news.
Des Moines report details Otto Helming of Allamakee County a German descendant in the Iowa assembly who refused to vote on resolutions pledging Iowa to the president and the flag. He argued neutrality was a sham, citing U S aid to England and a need to slow American involvement. He faulted Wilson for entangling the nation, accusing him of backing England and debts, while stressing American fairness and loyalty to the flag yet opposing current policy. W W O Social K O hall event announced with 10 cent admission and orchestra.
