Man Who Shot Gaynor Dies in State Hospital
James J. Gallagher, the man who shot Mayor Gaynor of New York in Hoboken nearly two years ago, died at the New Jersey state hospital for the insane in Trenton. Death was due to paresis. He had been at the hospital since January 18, 1912, after being moved from the state prison where he was serving twelve years for assault on Street Commissioner William Edwards of New York City, who was with Mayor Gaynor at the time. Gallagher was never prosecuted for the shooting. The act was at Mayor Garner's request. Gallagher's act stemmed from disappointment over being discharged from a municipal position in New York.
