Waverly Builds and Modernizes with 1927 Investments
Waverly businesses and residents undertook several construction and remodeling projects in 1927 totaling about 150000 dollars with additional sums likely invested in existing structures. A notable upgrade was adding an extra turbine evaporators and tanks at the Cexex factory for malt syrup production, costing 54900 dollars. First carload syrup shipment occurred December 15, with plant capacity now reaching 4000000 pounds annually. The Marshall Canning Company faced smaller output due to a poor soybean season but produced high quality corn. Bean canning showed profitable results, and plans emerged to lease more acreage next year. Numerous residences were built or remodeled on North Locust Street East Bremer Avenue and surrounding areas, including a brick bungalow by Ralph Russell. A remodeled Catholic parish converted to modern apartments, and a Landis Field Service station replaced the old facility at West Bremer Avenue. An expanded Waverly Greenhouse added an office, heating, and a larger boiler. The Wartburg Publishing House was also set for new headquarters.
