Waterloo party brings Christmas cheer to Camp Dodge

The Waterloo group returns from Camp Dodge after three hours there and a 13 hour round trip with a 115 mile drive. They report an optimistic spirit among soldiers away from home, with Y M C A facilities open for writing letters and sharing warmth and food. Norris sponsors another trip.

Cornel college extends vacation to save coal

Mt. Vernon Iowa December 26 The Cornell college faculty voted to lengthen the Christmas vacation to January 8 to conserve coal. They had planned a January 3 reopening but delaying start saves fuel since the heating plant would run for only five days. Lost days will be made up by counting Saturdays as school days.

Mason City to form co operative potato storage house

Mason City plans a cooperative potato storage house driven by the Retail Merchants' association. Iowa State College was asked to assist with building and management details. The plan envisions a stock issued company charging a fixed per bushel storage fee to aid both growers and retailers in handling the trade efficiently.

Cigar factory fire destroys plant and drug stock

Fire at 1330 Westfield avenue gutted the Clute and Willame cigar factory and damaged living rooms where Mrs. C Waldron resided and a Waldron restaurant. Drugs stored in the rear exploded, sending poisonous fumes. Loss to the factory about 750 dollars. the house and restaurant were uninsured. A second fire at 310 Fremont street burned the kitchen area but left most of the home intact. Authorities urge insurance coverage.

Long Search Finds Brother of Iowan

Roy Warring a Marshalltown postal clerk will meet his older brother Ralph W. Jones of Gettysburg S D in February in a reunion arranged after years of searching. Warring learned he was adopted and traced records to Des Moines Jasper county and Monroe Iowa leading to the discovery of his brother living in Gettysburg in cattle business. Ronald Taylor, son of Dr. and Mrs. T G Taylor, has returned home on holiday furlough after enlisting in the quartermaster corps. He is stationed at Marfa Texas and holds the rank of captain.
