Des Moines dispatch reports Gov. Harding plans a short war focused session, calling lawmakers to address only war matters. He may reconvene with the 37th General Assembly leadership and emphasizes stringent limits while assessing manpower, finances, and state defense powers.
Des Moines reports a January employment drive across the Midwest and West to recruit over 20,000 skilled workers for shipbuilding in the Puget Sound district. The effort is directed by the U S War Emergency Employment Service and coordinated with Washington and state councils of defense.
County officials completed the expense accounting for the two trials of Rev. Lyn George J. Kelly over the Villiscaux murder. Total costs reached 9782.28 with specific witness and jury fees listed. Additional trial costs and board reductions affected other claims including attorney fees and a physician charge.
Charlie Thomas, sentenced in Des Moines in 1905 for the murder of Mabel Scofield, will be released from Fort Madison penitentiary on parole. Gov Harding had earlier commuted the sentence from life to 30 years. Thomas has been an honor prisoner and will work on the prison farm after release. Judge A H McVay presided. A Sioux City father brought his underage son to the army recruiting office and asked for enlistment. The boy was not accepted, and the father lamented that military service would keep him away from women and stop his “gad about” nights.
Winton In December 22 a son was born Wednesday afternoon to Mr and Mrs E A Murphy. This is the first grandchild of Bernard Murphy editor of the Winton Engine. The baby is named Edward A Murphy after his father.
The League for National Unity in New York denounces premature peace and vows to continue fighting until Germany’s autocracy is broken. It argues the war is for democracy, not land, and condemns German peace terms as a bid to subdue self-governing nations. Notables head the group including Cardinal Gibbons and Samuel Gompers.
Special dispatches from Camp Cady near Deming New Mexico report the natural death of Private A. H. Hedlund of Stratford Iowa and Private William R. Basel of Winfield Iowa. A separate item notes a local school election in Washington state approving a 150000 dollar schoolhouse while a 100000 dollar project failed.
