Stone Mountain Puzzle Teases Geologists
Atlanta, Dec. 11. Stone Mountain’s curious geology puzzles geologists. The granite mass rises abruptly from the surrounding country and extends beneath much of Georgia and parts of four neighboring states. Experts suggest a 60 to 75 million year old upheaval created the mountain, now etched with a Confederate memorial, with granite bedrock found about 400 feet deep near Macon. Dr. S. W. McCallie notes that striking the granite implies a full stop for exploration.
