Des Moines dispatch reports rising sentiment among incoming legislators and party leaders to repeal the primary system and revert to conventions. Proposals include consolidating state offices such as the fire marshal and insurance, industrial commission, and labor services, with salaries and duties outlined for each post.
Washington reports the War Department withdrew recognition from Company 1, Second Regiment, Boone, and placed ten Iowa militia units on probation. The patrol notes cite low minimum strength and lack of trained officers as key deficiencies, with stricter rules to begin next June. In Dubuque on December 11 eight year old Stanley Keck was killed when a miniature land and rock slide buried him under a three foot boulder in a local quarry. Grandfather August Keck narrowly avoided injury as a wall of stone shifted.
Cedar Rapids, Dec. 11 The next central assembly will not be asked by electric, gas, street or inter urban railway companies to pose any bill creating a public utility commission. Attorney John A Reed, general attorney of Town Railway & Light Co and the Iowa Electric Co, says the majority of electric light street and interurban railways are chartered by Iowa and subject to law. The companies are satisfied to operate under statutes as they stand and will not seek legislation to create a public utility commission or strip cities of rate regulation. Reed notes no such bill was proposed last session and that a four year old bill came from foreign firms with plants in Iowa. He adds telephone firms sought only to extend jurisdiction and confer franchises. the Supreme Court has ruled that towns with existing plants hold perpetual franchises. He contends articles alleging gas and electric firms would back a util ity law are meant to stir public prejudice and are not the companies' doing.
Dubuque will honor returning national guard members with a welcome home demonstration planned by the Commercial club. Dozens of cars and two or three bands will greet the soldiers at the station, followed by a parade through the business district and a banquet with medals presented.
Centerville reports farmer John Mc Williams aged 52 near Exlina surrendered Saturday after fatally shooting his cousin John Ashbury, 30. Authorities describe the incident as the result of a tiny quarrel that escalated to deadly violence.
McWilliams testified he shot in self defense after a quarrel with Asbury who allegedly tried to pour kerosene on his clothes and burn him. The two men, alone, were husking corn and camping in a cabin on McWilliams' farm where the incident occurred. McWilliams is married with seven children.
