Street Car Men at Clinton Get Big Wage Lift

In Charles City Virginia a women section gang in overalls works on the Western railway. Six women and one foreman named Fred Bahr, known as Old Reliable, supervise the crew. Taxes East and West Remain Equal With One Exception
East and west taxes for the coming year are equal except for the sewer tax. Combined levies are one half mill less than three years ago. East and west sanitary fund levies were 2 mills each for three years. Library fund was 21.5 mills in 1916, 3 and 2.5 mills in 1917, and 2.5 mills each in 1918. West sewer tax stayed 3 mills, but the cast tax reduced from 2 in 1916 to 1 in 1917, then 0.5 this year. West sewer fund owes 1,106 of 2,350 debt, keeping west taxes higher until retirement of debt.

Firemen Assist Street Work With Alternate Shifts
Firemen will help with street cleaning after a three day labor shortage. Two firemen will be assigned on alternating weekdays, each car working ten hours from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 6 a.m. The nighttime hours are chosen to avoid traffic in the business district. Firemen on duty every other day agreed to take the extra shifts.
