Iowa Illinois onion crop review from Davenport growers
Davenport Iowa August 15 onions grown in this section and Illinois had the best year in years with a good early market and the crop below normal. The Pleasant Valley Onion Growers’ association reports shipping 63 cars averaging over $1,000 net per car to growers. Seed onions yielded under half a crop due to spring rains and postwar droughts. Onions graded well with good color and keepers for winter use. Prices range from 2 to 3.25 dollars per 100 pound sack FOB loading stations. Burlap sacks were cheaper after the war and demand has rebounded with Germany buying burlap from Calcutta. Iowa onions favored for flavor and quality, shipping to New England area, with limited western reach toward Nebraska. Each sack weighed 100 pounds and was inspected and packed into ventilated box cars, replacing earlier stock cars. Advertising remains a constant in this market.
