Illinois Central Financed Abroad
The Illinois Central system, completed in 1858, was funded mainly by stock sales in England and Holland. Current ownership shows 94 percent of common stock in the United States, with small shares in England Holland and other European nations. A 207 11 shares preferred stock is 98 percent U.S. owned. President C H Markham says credit drives railway efficiency and urges patron-investor safeguards. In Yosemite California an elderly squaw “Indian Lucy” is believed to be 120 years old living near Camp Curry and recalling events of a century.
