Three Story Front Planned for Historic Sterling Block
The Sterling company block on Fours and Water streets is being transformed into a uniform three story 60 foot front. Built about 1882 by Peter Rechtfertig, the corner section housed a hotel and later the post office and wholesale fruit store. Woods Brothers, under long-time lease to Sterling, lead the remodeling with a complete brick front, plate glass displays, and an arcade first floor. Construction by John G Milljer Construction Co. should finish in two weeks, with all three floors and basement to be used by Sterling.

What You May Want to Know About Building
What you may want to know about building explains varnish as a thick substance from fossil gums dissolved by heat in drying oils and treated rosin. It notes varnish includes Japan shellacs and lacquers though shellac contains no air. A separate question discusses a five year old home with stucco over wooden lath that has disintegrated causing loose bulging surfaces and likely removal of stucco.
