Fugitive's Death Echoes Goebel Shooting Past
Indianapolis, Aug 2 William S Taylor 76 former Kentucky governor elect in 1899 and central figure in the Goebel assassination controversy died in a hospital. Taylor fled to Indianapolis after Goebel was mortally wounded in 1900 and Indiana officials did not extradite him. The Goebel case triggered two rival governments in Kentucky and a federal legal fight ending with Taft upholding the Assembly. Taylor had faced conspiracy charges and a series of pardons and escapes through 1909.
