Iowa memories and the old pioneer spirit in Hale’s notes
F W Hale recalls youth in Cedar County Iowa with tales of fishing on a willow pole, Aunt Millie’s cooking, and trackbeds with agate gems. He contrasts past farm life with modern machinery, notes the torch parade in Garfield campaign, and reflects on religion, work, and pride in Iowa’s rugged development. He is a patient in Borchert hospital in Tripoli, Iowa, recovering from surgery.
