Car Shortage Forecast by Farm Bureau This Fall
The American Farm Bureau Federation traffic department predicts a heavy car shortage this fall as rail and ship capacity fail to keep pace with load demands. February through June show higher carloadings than 1920 and 1931, with surplus cars shrinking across box, coal, and coal car categories. Dock capacity at Duluth remains insufficient, hindering grain movement to Buffalo and raising contract rates. Experts attribute the shortage to ongoing strikes and systemic limits in dock and ship availability.
