Foreign language shifts in Iowa high schools
Yowa City August 1 news reports a shift in Iowa high school language offerings with French and Spanish displacing German. Data from the University of Iowa Romance Languages shows 70 Iowa high schools teaching French, 14 teaching Spanish, while German is nearly extinct.
Increase in French and Spanish teaching in Iowa high schools
Recognition of a tremendous rise in teaching French and Spanish in Iowa high schools came from the modern language round table of the Iowa State Teachers Association at Des Moines in November 1920. The outline for first and second year classes was directed by Prof. Carles EB. Young, Miss Louise Cotham, and Miss Sue Goltman and presented to the round table last November. Programs may follow for third and fourth year work.
