Banks Pay Little Tax After Iown Amendment
Black Hawk county faces a tax deficit of about 9000 to 10000 dollars due to an Iown amendment that allows banks to deduct government securities from capital stock before assessment. Banks outside Waterloo report capital stock of 672,586 dollars and federal securities totaling 582,921 dollars, leading to a small tax bill this year. A broader deficit may prompt a county property reevaluation to restore revenue.
