Paper shortage curb by federal effort doubted

Washington April 88 Associated Press reports doubt that the government can greatly ease the world wide print paper shortage. Frank P. Glass of Birmingham former president of the American Newspaper Publishers association told Senate Commerce subcommittee the shortage is global and prices are high due to excess profits and advertising demand. George McAneny of the New York Times agreed the rise in ads drives paper demand, noting production up 10 percent and read as 7 percent higher consumption. New York papers have been lending paper to each other for months as the inquiry considers production costs prices and circulation effects.
