National Guard Reorganization Authorized By War Dept

The War Department through the Bureau of Militia Affairs initiates the reconstruction of the national guard by authorizing seven infantry regiments, one extra battalion, one cavalry squadron and 18 coast artillery companies. New York, New Jersey and Ohio receive specific regimental quotas to replace state troops, with federal aid contingent on timely organization by June 30, 1918. Pennsylvania notes ample state forces and governors mayors anticipate emergencies. inflation of policy remains cautious toward full reorganization pending Congress action and demobilization of old units.
