Arbitration Board Fails to Settle Hawkeye Row in War Time

The Hawkeye Foundry and Molders Union dispute ends without a ruling as the board finds the “open shop” issue beyond its jurisdiction. It urges both sides to subordinate interests for the public good, noting war conditions and rising costs. Testimony covered the Handy Men clause and wage scales, with Waterloo officials denying wage gains while warning of material price hikes. A federal mediator's visit to Waterloo adds uncertainty about future action.
