Ancient Pottery Reveals Hopi Orpheus Legend Tale
Washington April 6 The fragments of a prehistoric Indian pottery piece collected by Dr. R S Lipscomb from Townoc near Mesa Verde Colo have reached the Smithsonian Institution The inner base decoration tells a story akin to the Greek Orpheus myth and is said to be a unique depiction in black and white ware dating perhaps 1500 years The scene shows two men and many birds one man pipes or calls the birds while the other bears a bow and arrow Dr Fewkes notes the motif parallels Hopi flute ceremonies and sun calling rites observed at solstice with nine day observance The discovery adds to rock carving traditions in northern Arizona and echoes a similar scene found during 1920 by Dr Fewkes at Mesa Verde
