Boone community leaders organized a religious census and home to home visitation for September 12 at the Baptist church. The effort aims to count nonattenders and church affiliations while inviting residents to join and attend Sunday schools, with a union meeting to brief canvassers and share notes from the 1926 census.
David Wooten, convicted in Watauga Superior Court for the slaying of Leonard Triplett near Blowing Rock, has been remanded to jail and will start his three to five year term in the state prison within days after Supreme Court confirmation of his sentence.
Miss Lula Taylor returns from New York to spend weeks at home. Misses Lucy Mast and Annie Clark depart for Charlotte to study at King's Business College. C. D. Taylor attends Boone court as grand jury foreman. Cove Creek high school opens this week and a new bus serves Valle Crucis and nearby areas.
Farmers here report corn fruit and vegetables maturing well with threshing underway. Forest Grove church hosts a series of meetings this week drawing solid interest with five professions to date. Mrs J M Johnson remains ill. Forest Grove School progresses under Roby Vines and Misses Pearl Bingham and Elizabeth Holt.
Hon Robert L Doughton spoke to a large crowd in Watauga county to claim reelection from the eighth district He highlighted Democratic measures such as the Federal Reserve system Farm Loan law public highway act and parcel post law and criticized Republican economizing as inflated spending He noted highway progress and urged voters to judge him by his congressional record and farm relief efforts
State highway engineers led by Engineer Nichols plan immediate improvements to the Lenoir Blowing Rock road above Patterson. The highway commission has 75000 dollars to spend in the next few months with work to start around the 15th, though a short delay is possible.
Last year’s effort at winter farming paid off for those who tried it. Planting cover crops could benefit hay, grazing, and grain this season. The State Beekeepers' Association is in session in Greensboro this week.
Democrats at the courthouse Saturday nominated a full ticket for county offices except treasurer. Ex Governor Cameron Morrison spoke to a packed audience praising Democratic progress, urging unity, and calling on young Republicans to join the party.
Last Sunday the Blowing Rock Baptist Church burned notes showing a $2927.95 debt on the new sanctuary. Over $2500 was raised on the fifth Sunday, with a $1000 pledge from J F Brown to cover the remainder. The church is debt free except for two years of stock payments and may pay off earlier, needing only a heating plant. Rev. F M Huggins praised contributors and invited Baptists and visitors to worship.
Nineteen people died and 50 were injured when the Scenic Special of the Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad left the tracks near Leadville. The engine and seven cars toppled into the Arkansas river after striking a rock on a curved section, tearing up 150 feet of track and plunging across the river. Baggage cars two coaches and a sleeper followed, piling up in eight feet of water.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Cross church Valle Crucis for Lee Frantis Anthony on Sunday September 12 at 11 am. The service includes hymns Kyrie Eleison and All Hail the Power of Jesus Name and will be conducted by Rev. James P. Burke rector of Holy Cross church with Rev. S R Guignard of St. Luke's Lincolnton as special preacher. Congregations from St Luke's Lincolnton also participate. The public is invited.
In Hollywood California Rudolph Valentino was laid to rest in the mausoleum beside Virginia Mathis, mother of June Mathis and Valentino's friend and advisor. Neighbors and friends gathered as tender hands placed him in the crypt and whispered prayers for his repose.
The Cove Creek high school opened with 320 students, 160 in the high school department. Local patrons and education board members attended the opening exercises. Talks by D D Dougherty, S Hagaman, W F Sherwood, E Swift, A J Greene, and Rev Hurst outlined aims for the year. Principal S F Horton announced new faculty members and urged continued cooperation for a banner year.
Prof and Mrs C J Greene return to Storey college for the school year. Miss Blanche Horton goes to Meredith college to study public school music. A Greer Glenn of Watauga Falls visits. J J Glenn shows health improvement. Hattie Bingham on vacation from Knoxville. J D Horton opens school at Banner Elk. Mast boys install a new roller mill in Cove Creek plant. Bradshaw Beach suffers a severe accident falling from a moving truck.
Charlie Renfro killed Clyde Palmer 27 while driving along the highway between Buzzard Rock and Elk Wallow about 4 am. Palmer, a contractor's son, and Renfro, both from Buncombe, were involved in a long-standing feud. Renfro fled and has not yet been captured.
Farmers in Chowan County sold 266 hogs for a little over $6,000 during swine feeding demonstrations. The hogs were killed for meat, and farmers expect higher barley plantings for hay grazing and grain this fall due to last season's good results.
The fall term of Watauga superior court opened with Judge Henry P. Lane and A. H. Casey presiding. After jurors were charged, many criminal cases were disposed of through Wednesday afternoon, with trials ongoing on burglary arson and liquor offenses and the grand jury continuing work under foreman C. D. Taylor.
