Registrars will be at polling places this Saturday to register new voters for the November election. The books stay open for 20 days and close on October 27. Registrars available at polling sites weekly and at their homes on other days for adding names.
Cove Creek high school shows strong attendance with 168 for the high school and 162 for grades. The list names students in each grade who were never absent or tardy in October. The Cove Creek baseball team beat Boone 14 to 5 at Mabel. A pie sale raised about 29 dollars for home nursing equipment. Local homes near D F Brown and B B Beach nearing completion. Mr and Mrs Plato Herndon of Kings Mountain visited Miss Grace Blalock on Sunday.
News from Syracuse reports Attorney General Albert Ottinger is nominated for New York governor by the Republican convention. Also named for the U S Senate is Alanson B. Houghton, former American ambassador to Great Britain. Beckham backs Smith in Kentucky. The World provides state by state electoral forecasts with Smith and Hoover projections.
Franklin D Roosevelt abandons his earlier refusal to run and accepts the Democratic nomination for New York governor in support of Governor Smith and the presidential campaign. The announcement came in Warm Springs Georgia on October 2.
Minneapolis reader Prophet Jim McNulty, based at General Delivery, forecasts a sweeping Al Smith Robinson win in the nation. He claims Hoover will be paralyzed by the result and predicts Volsteadism will endure long after the election.
Hon E E Cox Georgia congressman will address Watauga voters at Cove Creek High School this Thursday at 3 PM. The talk, under county Democratic committee auspices, invites public attendance.
Boone Civitan Club discussed Fire Prevention Week plans and a possible Kraft Cheese plant in the county. A meeting with farmers may be arranged to discuss supplying milk while Kraft considers the proposal next year. call for inspections before winter and a Florida hurricane relief collection of 17.55.
Hon. E. L. Gavin district attorney for the middle district of North Carolina will address county voters on campaign issues at the courthouse on October 18 at 11 o'clock a m. Gavin is described as a capable speaker and local Republicans consider him a fortunate pick for the event.
Attorney T. E. Bingham of Brown and Bingham bought the Moretz house from W. H. Gragg on North Water street and plans to move his family soon. The home is noted as one of the city’s most attractive properties.
Mr Roby Hardin of Knoxville Tennessee is in the city for a few days visiting relatives and friends. He is a son of the late James H Hardin and is always a welcome visitor to the city.

Mrs Frank McGhee accompanied by her daughter Kathryn Gray returned to her home here Sunday after visiting for a few days with her husband who is employed at Quantico Virginia.

Choose medium height ears with drooping husks and compact ears to resist rain and insects. Dry thoroughly before storage and test germination in winter before planting.
A Greensboro address by Hon. C. Clifford Frazier reviews the 1921 Republican rise and the Coolidge Mellon era. He praises debt reduction from 26.5 to about 18 billion, tax cuts totaling nearly 2 billion, and rapid industry recovery, while noting North Carolina taxes rose locally. He cites foreign policy strides from Hughes and Kellogg and antiwar accords. He defends immigration limits and labor prosperity, contrasting Democratic attacks and jail counts.
Ground broken west of Miller-Moretz Motor Co for a two story brick structure 22 by 44 feet. W. R. Winkler & Co will use first floor as tire and accessory sales room and second floor for vulcanizing and battery rebuilding plant with Firestone expert assisting. Project cost about $10,000.
A serious wreck occurred on the road between New River bridge and Glendale Springs last Sunday. The collision between a large truck and a Chevrolet car during passing killed Cuthy Severt instantly and left several others seriously injured as the truck overturned. Severt was a prominent Glendale Springs citizen survived by his wife and several children.
Mrs. E. S. Coffey received a letter from her daughter Ruth, director of music at Jonesboro College in Arkansas, stating the Baptist institution will continue its term as $15,000 was raised locally. The risk arose from the misappropriation of church funds by Clinton S. Carns, treasurer of the home mission board, prompting rallies by the chamber of commerce and others. Miss Coffey, formerly director of music at the Normal School in Boone, expressed satisfaction with her new role.
The timetable covers Herbert Hoover’s October 6 visit to Elizabethton Tennessee with a Washington start October 5. Events include a Bristol arrival at 16 48, lunch at 12 30, a rest 1 30 to 2 30, a 3 pm speech on the grounds, and a 4 15 pm address at Soldiers' Home then departure at 6 pm.
Ollie Eggers Lyons of Watauga and Jonesboro Tenn. died September 27 in a Johnson City hospital. She was a Baptist church member for 24 years and taught Sunday school and earlier taught school in North Carolina and Tennessee. Her interment was in Zionville with Rev. R C Eggers officiating and many relatives attending.
The Republicans of Watauga County met at the courthouse Saturday to nominate candidates for county offices, reorganize party machinery, and adopt resolutions honoring the late F A Linney. Attorney C C Frasier spoke on campaign issues as W H Gragg was reelected chairman.
