Alfred Isaacs a prominent resident of Bairds Creek died after several months illness. Funeral services were at Cove Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Wellington Swift in charge. Interment followed at Mast cemetery. Survived by widow and seven children in Puritan Whitehall Sherwood Boone Vilas Lem Isaacs was killed in a Pennsylvania mine years ago. Isaacs native to Watauga County spent life here as a thrifty farmer and valued citizen. His death saddened many county residents.
Congressman Doughton of the Eighth District spoke at the Mabel school house last Saturday detailing his House tenure, praising Wilson era legislation, and pledging rural-friendly measures. He praised federal highway funding, contrasted Hoover, criticized tariff and farm policy, and noted North Carolina received over forty eight million dollars. Ed S. Williams introduced him to a crowd with many Republicans present.
Rambling Around notes Watauga shows strong tobacco growth with little curing space, good bean yields with minimal beetle damage, and an average to excellent corn crop in places. Frost on Beaver Dam caused no damage while the county’s T B Clinic expands and positive reactions remain low relative to the state.
Congressman William Cicero Hammer, age 66, longtime Seventh District representative, died suddenly at his Asheboro home after lunch. He had campaigned for re election and had attended Major Stedman’s funeral the day before. Funeral services were held at the Asheboro Methodist Protestant Church, with Congressman Bob Doughton delivering the memorial.
Mrs Charles L Bowers of Bristol Tenn reports a Boone Delphian Society branch may form soon with a national secretary to assist. The society offers home study and bi monthly discussions in arts and culture, with six year courses in history art drama music literature and modern history, limited to fifty members per group.
The Civitan Clacker reports two stuffed whang-doodles awarded to Carolina Civitans A B E South of Boone and Hugh A Query of Gastonia for submitting On-to Greensboro Chairmen names. Boone club predicts fifteen to twenty attendees at the convention.
Seven survivors of Lee’s army attended the final Camp Nimrod Triplett reunion at State Teachers College Boone. Captain E J Norris led the program with memorials by Professor Norton and Rev Worley as veterans recalled Chicamauga Missionary Ridge and Gettysburg. One dozen Confederate veterans remain in the county as Boone marks the curtain on the Lost Cause gatherings.
King College defeated Appalachian State College 18 to 7 in Bristol last Saturday afternoon. King opened with two first quarter touchdowns, ASU fumbled twice in the second period, King scored again in the third after ASU recovery, ASU answered with a late drive but could not score. Biltmore Junior College defeated Appalachian State Reserves 14 to 0 the same day. Catawba College will open its Mountaineers home schedule October 11 under coach Charlie Moran.
Watauga County growers bring Irish potatoes to the Watauga Democrat office. Two unusual entries stun editors: Clarence Angel grows an electric light globe shaped potato with a socket end. Dwight Edmisten presents a potato formed like a pig’s foot with toe-nails and all.
Dr Thomas Proffitt a well known Elk Park physician died at Banner Elk Hospital last Wednesday from injuries from an automobile crash near his hometown. The car overturned after he diverted attention to light a cigar. Funeral services were held Thursday. Proffitt was widely known and had many relatives in Watauga County. Also report notes Don Bingham son of John H Bingham Sugar Grove slowly improving at home after Camel City bus crash near Bristol four weeks ago.
Wa tauga's respected citizen A W Beach, 76, died Sunday at his son Enzor Beach’s home by Howard's Creek after a long illness. Rev Roe Payne and Rev Ed Greene conducted the funeral at Rich Mountain Cemetery. Survived by eight children, wife preceded him weeks earlier.
Sam Rhea 62 son of the late Dr R C Rhea of Shoans Tenn died suddenly at his sister’s home near Silver Lake last Sunday noon during a family dinner after returning from Los Angeles. He had a long mining career in Arizona and California and resided in Los Angeles. Surviving are his widow, son Robert, two daughters Caroline and Peger, mother Mrs R C Rhea, and several siblings. Funeral service was held at the Shount Methodist Church with Rev. William Marsh and Rev. Walter Worley officiating. interment followed in the nearby cemetery. Active pallbearers were James Shull Tom McQueen Jasper Baker R C Rivers Clyde Wagner Charles Dulaney. Honorary pallbearers included E L McDade James Wagner J P McCain R R Donnelly E E Butler W T Smythe R L Nave Ed Grant R W Seehorn J M Potter Wiley Mount and Dean Dotson.
Bethel schoolhouse hosts a Saturday October 11 fair with morning speeches and music and afternoon contests. Prizes include food items, pies, and crafts plus a percolator and other awards from local sponsors. An oldest person prize and a duet by Will Farthing and Clyde Perry highlight the event.
