Grandin Lumber and Railways Put Under Receiver

A federal suit in Asheville led Judge James E. Boyd to appoint W J Grandin as receiver for the Grandin Lumber Company and the Watauga & Yadkin River Railway Company. Assets are about 7 million against 1.95 million liabilities, with Grandin also president of both firms. The case notes European war effects and a failed London loan, while promising protection for creditors and stockholders as plans to stabilize the enterprises proceed. The timber lands span 720,000 acres in Watauga Wilkes and Caldwell counties with major holdings valued at 6 to 7 million, and a 150 000 foot per day mill is idle until finances improve. The rail line runs 21 miles from North Wilkesboro to Grandin and 4 miles from Elkville Junction to Denny, with service to continue during receivership. This marks the largest receivership in Western North Carolina Federal Court history.
