Danville Illinois November 12 Joseph Gurney Cannon longtime congressman died at his home at noon after a long life of public service He was born in Guilford County North Carolina and moved to Illinois with his parents in 1840 41 He helped found the Second National Bank in Danville and remained a weekly public figure after leaving Congress He last acted four months ago turning the sod for a new St James Methodist church The widespread obituary notes his return to private life and his faded memory with advancing age He was 90 years old and died of heart weakness in his sleep

Sheriff destroys still near Deep Gap during Sunday night raid
Sheriff Farthing and deputies destroyed a 60 gallon kerosene barrel still near Deep Gap. They also burned beer rye and corn meal found at the site. The plant showed signs of recent operation, but no one was present when the raid occurred.

Boone to organize a modern volunteer fire department
Citizens met at the Critcher Hotel by mayor Cottrell to form Boone’s volunteer fire department. J Frank Moore was elected fire chief with two units planned west and east of the Baptist church. Each unit will have a reel, 500 feet hose, two extinguishers and six rain coats.
