The Watauga election returns show Franklin D. Roosevelt the first Democrat to win the county this century with a 247 majority. Bob Reynolds top County ticket by 30, Senator Bailey by 87, and Overman and Simmons failed to gain a majority. Dr. J. B. Hagaman set a county coroner record with 1 054. Socialist votes totaled 19. Congressman Doughton won by about 20 000 in his twelfth House race. Sheriff-elect Baird is son of 1892 sheriff Dave Baird.

Thomas Sides Dies in Blowing Rock Apoplexy
Thomas Sides aged 44 died Friday evening at his Blowing Rock home seven minutes after being stricken with apoplexy. Funeral services were held Sunday at Blowing Rock Baptist Church with military honors by the American Legion. He was a World War veteran, survived by a widow and two children, and had resided in Blowing Rock nine years as a garage mechanic.

Seek Supplies for Grandfather Home to Aid Orphans
Officials of the Grandfather Orphans Home at Banner Elk plan a regional truck drive next week to collect foodstuffs and canned goods for orphaned children. The truck will visit Boone on Saturday, November 26, asking residents to bring donations to the Upper Carolina store before the truck arrives. A generous response is requested from Wa tau gans.

Bird season opens in Watauga Sunday
Warden H. G. Farthing announces the open season for quail and rabbit hunts begins Sunday with no season for ring neck pheasants. Quail and rabbits may be taken until February 15 and pheasants for ten days only, through the 28th.

Floy Cottrell was named Miss Boone-1932 at Boone High School pageant held Friday night with about 400 attendees. Proceeds benefit the high school library fund. Judges were M. S. Knight P. E. Gibson and W. G. Fowler. Runner up was Inez Gragg and Lucille Miller named Miss Boone High School-1932. Other contestants included Elizabeth King Ruby Wilson Geneva Cook and several others. An opening program featured Ruth Rutherford Buck Carson and Mildred McDade with R. Pauly’s orchestra from Johnson City TN.
