The Blowing Rock water supply and sewer system, under construction since last July, should finish this week. Built at 100000 dollars, it serves the town and may extend to Mayview Park and Green Park. Seven miles of water pipe and 12000 feet of sewer line were laid, with Mayview well at 220 feet delivering 90 gallons per minute and a second 500 foot deep well delivering 50 gallons per minute. Reservoirs include a 60000 gallon Mayview concrete tank and a 170000 gallon steel standpipe atop the hotel hill, maintaining 95 pounds pressure without pumping. The septic tank and sludge bed filter meet state health standards. The completion marks a major gain for summer visitors, though a recent fire at Watauga Inn underscored the need for a new fire truck, ordered two months ago and due in about a month. The truck, an American La France with two 200 gallon chemical tanks, costs 5000 dollars funded by subscriptions and local benefactors.
