A permanent organization was formed with Jim Rivers as chairman and other officers named, planning future township meetings.
Mrs. E F Harmon age 76 died at her Zion Hill home on Sunday May 8 after a long illness possibly due to cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral held Monday at 3 pm by Rev W H Glenn. burial in family cemetery. Survived by husband Oscar Harmon daughter Mrs Nettie Stynes Beech Creek son Roby Harmon Elk Tenn. Member Missionary Baptist Church.
Twenty eight members of the Wa tauga County Hunting and Fishing Club and other local sportsmen met at the Daniel Boone Hotel to plan the season. Middle Fork will be under club control from the New River Light and Power dam to the Snyder property near Blowing Rock with a fifty cent fee for members and one dollar for non members. Over five thousand brook and rainbow trout have been released this season and the streams are in excellent condition.
Federal Court for cases from Wilkes and nearby counties will convene in Wilkesboro on May 28 after a May 16 postponement. Judge Johnson J. Hayes presides. District Attorney J F McCrary prosecutes the heavy May docket dominated by prohibition violation cases. Jurors from Watauga include Collis Austin R P Miller A C Mast S G Carroll B Fred Cook Howard Holshouser Will B Reese Joe J Wellborn Charles L Younce Joe L Coffey Conley Glenn Carl Byers.
Professor I G Greer of Appalachian State Teachers College proposes a mountain passion play in the Great Smoky Mountains modeled after Oberammergau. The project seeks national appeal and park service backing, with natives as singers. Also reports the death of Pashia Dotson, aged 87, of Poplar Grove, with funeral services at Poplar Grove Baptist Church and burial at Gragg Cemetery.
Dessa Mae Triplett of Matney earned a B S at Appalachian State Teachers College and attained the highest honors in the school’s history through broad extracurricular leadership. She led the Y W C A as president, excelled in debating and oratory, edited the Rhododendron, served as business manager, class poet, biology lab assistant, and led multiple clubs, with a stellar academic record.
Green Park Hotel, a famed Blowing Rock hostelery, will open May 28 with a dinner dance. Governor of North Carolina and other dignitaries invited. Paul Moldenhauer of Florida, a hotelist, now in charge after purchasing the property. Extensive repairs and interior refitting underway with new furniture to add appeal.
Watauga County Bank and Peoples Industrial Bank will be closed on Monday May 20 in observance of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence signing.
The twenty eighth annual Holston Presbyterial of the Synod of Appalachia will meet May 23 to 25 at Mayview Manor Blowing Rock. Delegates stay with Blowing Rock Auxiliary hosts while Tuesday features public sessions. Highlights include Hebrews study by Mrs J S Poindexter and an address by Mrs R C Anderson.
A revival begins Sunday May 22 at Cove Creek Baptist Church with Rev J A McKaughan hosting Rev B E Morris of Statesville as revival preacher. A daily Bible school starts Monday May 23 inviting children ages 3 to 17 with a class for older youths.
North Wilkesboro council hosts Seventh District Junior Order meeting Tuesday May 24 with a 3:30 pm business session and 8 pm open session. Officials say several matters will be discussed and some degree work performed as Wa tauga members are urged to attend.
